Who we are
SkiSavvy (skisavvy.com) is run by the company that operates it ("we", "us"; contact details are under "Contact" below). Our Privacy Officer is responsible for how we handle personal information. Email the Privacy Officer with any privacy question or request. Under European, UK and Swiss data protection law, the company that runs SkiSavvy is the controller.
The short version
- No account, no sign-up, no forms. We don't ask for your name or email.
- We count visits with Google Analytics. In the European Economic Area, Gibraltar and Quebec, nothing is set unless you click Accept. In the UK and Switzerland you can switch it off under "Cookie settings".
- Your settings (units, starred hills) stay in your browser. We never see them.
- If you use the location button on a trail map, your position stays on your device. It is never sent to us.
- We don't sell personal information and we don't use it for advertising.
What we collect and why
Visit statistics (Google Analytics 4). Which pages are viewed and for how long, the type of device and browser, screen size, the site that sent you to us, and your approximate location (country, region, city), which Google works out from your IP address without storing the address. Google Analytics sets the cookies listed below. We use this to see which hills and features people use and to improve the site. Google's advertising features and "Google signals" are turned off, and we don't link this data to any person. Google keeps it for up to 14 months.
Delivery and security (Cloudflare). The site is delivered through Cloudflare, Inc., which caches pages and images near you and blocks attacks and bots. Cloudflare sees each request's IP address, page, time and browser type, keeps request logs under its own privacy policy, may give us cookieless, aggregate traffic statistics, and may set the security cookies listed below. On a hill page, Cloudflare Turnstile checks that you are a person and not a script, using signals from your browser and your IP address; passing it gives you a 30-day "human pass" cookie that lets the page load conditions data. Our own server keeps no log of visitors' addresses; it holds the address in memory for about an hour only to limit how often one address can call our data services.
Your country, for the consent rules. To decide which cookie rules apply to you, we work out the country (and, in Canada, the province) of your IP address, either in a GeoLite2 database on our own server or, as a fallback, from the location Cloudflare already works out for each request. Your browser keeps only the resulting rule set ("consent", "object" or "none") for as long as the tab is open, never the country or the address. If we can't tell where you are, we apply the strictest rules and ask for consent. This product includes GeoLite Data created by MaxMind, available from https://www.maxmind.com.
Location on trail maps. If you tap the location button and allow it, your browser shows your position on the map. It stays on your device: it is not sent to us, Google or anyone else, and it is not stored.
Settings on your device. Your units, starred hills, the last hill you opened, picker and card states, dismissed hints and opening-days filters are kept in your browser's local storage so the site remembers them. Which cookie rules apply to you (
skisavvy.consentRegion) is kept in session storage while the tab is open, so the lookup isn't repeated on every page; it is needed for the site to apply those rules and needs no consent. Where we don't ask for consent (see "Cookies" below), the site also keeps a 14-day note of which hill pages you opened on which days, so it can suggest starring a hill you keep coming back to. None of this is sent to us. Clear your browser's site data for skisavvy.com to remove it.Email. If you email us, we keep your address and message for up to 2 years so we can reply and keep a record.
We make no decisions about you by automated means that have legal or similar effects.

Where consent is required. If you are in the European Economic Area (the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, including France's overseas territories), Gibraltar or Quebec, Google Analytics is loaded only after you click Accept, and the 14-day hill note is not kept. If you reject, the banner comes back after a week. In the United Kingdom and Switzerland, Google Analytics runs unless you turn it off under "Cookie settings" at the bottom of any page. In both cases you can change your choice at any time with that link. Everywhere else, Google Analytics runs when you visit; you can block it in your browser or with Google's opt-out add-on (tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout).
The consent, human-pass, beta and Cloudflare cookies, and the session note of which cookie rules apply to you, are needed for the site to work and stay secure. They don't need consent.
Legal basis (EEA, UK and Swiss visitors)
Google Analytics: your consent where we ask for it; elsewhere our legitimate interest in understanding how the site is used, with your right to object. Cloudflare delivery and security, Turnstile, rate limits and the country lookup: our legitimate interest in keeping the site up, secure and lawful. Email: our legitimate interest in replying to you.
Where your information goes
The website runs on a server in Los Angeles, United States; some supporting systems may run in other countries. Cloudflare serves the site from data centres around the world. Google (United States) processes the analytics data. Google and Cloudflare are certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, its UK extension and the Swiss-US Data Privacy Framework; where a transfer needs more, we rely on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses. Quebec visitors: your information is processed outside Quebec, including in the United States.
The site uses HTTPS. Access to our server and to Google Analytics is limited to the people who run SkiSavvy.
Your rights
You can ask what personal information we hold about you and ask us to correct or delete it. In the EEA, UK and Switzerland you can also ask us to restrict it or hand it over, object to processing based on legitimate interest, and withdraw consent at any time (which doesn't undo what was done before). Email the Privacy Officer; we answer within 30 days. Because we hold no names or accounts, we usually can't find records about you in analytics data.
You can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, the Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec, the CNIL (France) or your own EU data protection authority, the UK Information Commissioner's Office, or the Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
We don't change how the site works in response to "Do Not Track" or Global Privacy Control signals, because we don't sell personal information or share it for advertising. To stop analytics, use "Cookie settings" where it is shown, or the blocking options above. No other party collects personal information about you across other sites through SkiSavvy; Google receives only what Google Analytics collects on this site.
Children
SkiSavvy is for people planning a ski day. It isn't aimed at children, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13 (under 14 in Quebec).
Changes
If we change how we handle information, we update this page and the date at the top. If we ever add accounts, sign-ups or advertising, we will say so here first.
